Hadaway Finds No Hideaway

« Those snipers were about everywhere, » recalled Pfc. Howard E. Hadaway, mortar gunner. « I was damn lucky ».
Hadaway had just come off the line for a rest after a strong infantry attack, during which he was forced to lay fire while unprotected from continual sniper fire on his flank. He had moved up in support of the infantry when concerted fire forced him into the dirt.

« I had just reached a decent position and was about to set up when a bullet slammed into the tube », he said. « I had to lie there and try to knock it back into working order while they kept shooting at me. »

« It took 10 minutes to get the mortar fixed », he continued. « Then I had to lay fire-missions. I was sure scared. Don’t recall now if they ever got the snippers out. »
