From the K Summary Of Operations — 36th Division », World War I, the the following paragraph is quoted of the 36th Division in the Meuse-Argonne (Champagne) Offensive : The 71st Infantry Brigade, 36th Division, was attached to the 2nd Division near St. Etienne-à-Arnes on Oct. 6th and took command of the line on October 7th, On Oct. 10th the 36th Division completed the relief of the 2nd Division and assumed command of the zone of action. An attack on this date resulted in a gain of about 1 kilometer. As the result of information that the Germans were retreating the 36th Division was ordered to maintain close contact with the enemy. It took up the pursuit on Oct. 11th and, overcoming strong rear-guard machine gun resistance, advanced to a position beyond Machault. The division resumed the persuit on the 12th, and advanced to a position north and west of Vaux-Champagne. On the 12th it attacked and established a line along the Aisne River. Boundaries were changed on Oct. 14, 21 and 23. By the last date the division occupied a front extending from Fontenille Ferme to Givry. On Oct. 27th the 71st Infantry Brigade made a successful local attack south of Rilly-aux-Oies. During two succeeding night, Oct. 26-27 and 27-28, the 36th Division was relieved by the French 22nd and 61st Divisions..
