Lake Brownwood Park
Re-designated For 36th

The people of Texas haven’t forgotten the exploits of the 36th Division, and they too, have changed a few names in lieu of the division. The State Highway 36, has been changed to « 36th Division Memorial Highway », and now the word comes from Austin and the State Parks Board that they have voted unanimously to re-designate the Lake Brownwood State Park in honor of the 36th Division now fighting in France.

Lake Brownwood State Park is located near the original site of the 36th, at Camp Bowie, where the Division was mobilized Nov. 25, 1940.

Chairman J. V. Ash, Bastrop, Texas, of the State Parks Board announced that the recreation spot’s new name will be the « 36th Division State Park » at Lake Brownwood.

At an approperiate spot in the park, the citizens of Brownwood plan to erect a native-stone marker commemorating the valorous deeds of the fighting 36th.

Last spring, a committee was organized as the 36th Division Memorial Commission with headquarters at Temple, Texas. They have proposed for the division a half-million dollar Memorial to be built in a park at Temple, the center of the state, and home of McCloskey General Hospital, where many 36th Division veterans of Italy are convalescents.
