Tank Destroyers
Get Commendation

The War Department has commended the attached TD’s for outstanding performance of duty in action, on 13 and 14 September 1943, during the invasion of Italy.

Following two hostile air attacks, the enemy launched an armored assault at positions occupied by the TD [battalion]. Members of the unit fired machine guns, rifles point blank, and engaged the enemy vehicles with hand grenades.

During the battle, the TD’s destroyed 14 German Mark IV tanks and one ammunition vehicle, and so overwhelmingly crushed the attack that no further attempt was made in that sector.

The TD’s performance is worthy of emulation and reflects the highest traditions of the Army of the United States.
