Screen-Door Canteen Boon to 36th Troops

About the busiest place we know of is the SNACK BAR of the Enlisted Men’s Club, otherwise known as “SCREEN-DOOR CANTEEN”, where a thousand plus Gis enjoy oceans of coffee with doughnuts, barrels of ice—cold lemonade, sandwiches, and gallons of real home-made (well, almost) ice cream—five days each week.

A former exclusive Italian Ristorante, the 36th’s “SCREEN-DOOR CANTEEN” leaves little to be desired, with its beautiful garden, and a patio where movies are shown nightly, two nights running. Upstairs you will find ample writing desks and all kinds of stationary and V-mail, as well as a large library of books and magazines to curl-up with, or spar a few rounds on the ping-pong table.

The SNACK BAR is always the live-spot of any club, and this one is no exception. Coffee is served from 10 to 11 AM, Lemonade and snacks 3 to 5 PM, and ice cream 7 to 9 PM, and there are always some of the ARC girls on hand to assist in the serving.

At least once a day the Division Band is on hand with some solid arrangements that has the joint-jumpin’ in nothing flat, and the rest of the time, the latest V-discs are played over the PA system.

Tuesdays and Saturdays, are reserved exclusively for officers of the 36th who have the same schedule as the Enlisted Men.

The “Canteen” is operated by Division Special Service, who admit the Club is a most ambition undertaking, but the capacity crowds present for snacks each day is proof of its success. Through cooperation with ARC, it is hoped that five such set-ups as the “Canteen” can be utilized in the future for the division.
